Why Are Brighton Vs Crystal Palace Rivals? Graham Potter’s Seagulls Host Patrick Vieira’s Eagles In Premier League Clash

Fierce rivals Brighton and Crystal Palace go head-to-head in one of the Premier League’s most intriguing battles on Friday.

It’s an unusual rivalry given the distance between Brighton and Croydon and for its relatively recent emergence, which means it’s definitely no derby.

But the clashes between the two are always entertaining, with Neal Maupay scoring a 95th minute equaliser to rescue a 1-1 draw for Brighton at Selhurst Park in September’s reverse fixture.

Brighton v Crystal Palace: Team news

Brighton midfielder Enock Mwepu will miss the game against Crystal Palace due to a hamstring injury suffered in last weekend’s FA Cup win at West Brom.

Centre-back Adam Webster is fit to return after sitting out at The Hawthorns as a precaution, while Seagulls midfielder Moises Caicedo could make his top-flight debut having been recalled from a loan spell at Belgian club Beerschot.

Captain Lewis Dunk (knee), Mali midfielder Yves Bissouma (international duty) and back-up goalkeeper Jason Steele (back) remain absent for Albion.

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, will be without five experienced players with defender James Tomkins the latest to join the treatment table.

Tomkins is unavailable for a “couple of weeks” due to an unspecified injury according to boss Patrick Vieira, who was already missing James McArthur with a hamstring issue and the trio of Cheikhou Kouyate, Jordan Ayew and Wilfried Zaha due to their African Cup of Nations commitments.

First-choice goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, who dislocated a finger last month, sat out last weekend’s 2-1 win at Millwall in the FA Cup but is expected to return.

Brighton v Crystal Palace: What are the origins of the rivalry?

Most of football’s great rivalries feature teams fighting for local supremacy or involved in long years of intense competition for trophies.

Neither is true for Palace’s rivalry with Brighton – born from just one memorable season in 1976/77.

Back then, the clubs appointed rival managers Terry Venables (Palace) and Alan Mullery (Brighton) and went toe-to-toe for promotion from the then-Third Division.

Both sides achieved their goal, although Mansfield actually won the league that year, but the two clubs were bitter enemies by the end of the season.

Palace and Brighton were also drawn together in the first round of the FA Cup that season which – after two draws and the second replay being delayed twice due to bad weather – Crystal Palace won 1-0 after Brighton were controversially denied a late penalty.

Controversial moments in the following years, such as the game with five penalties and Mullery becoming Eagles boss, only added fuel to the fire.
